MOIRAI General Assembly 2026: Building momentum in Copenhagen
On 12 – 13 February 2026, the MOIRAI consortium gathered in Copenhagen for its General Assembly, hosted by the Danish Meteorological Institute. Over two days of intensive discussions, partners reviewed progress across work packages and aligned on the next steps toward delivering robust, policy-relevant climate insights for Europe’s seas and coasts.
The Assembly showcased clear progress in refining regional ocean physics models (WP2), advancing biogeochemical and ecosystem modelling for coastal services (WP3), and strengthening multi-scale coastal impact and risk assessment tools (WP4). High-performance computing (WP5), led by partners including the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, remains central to ensuring model robustness, uncertainty quantification and scalability. Updates on decision support tools (WP6) and demonstration and validation activities (WP7) further highlighted the project’s commitment to delivering usable climate services.
Dr. Denis Istrati, National Technical University of Athens, opened the discussions, setting the scene for continued collaboration and momentum as the project moves into its next phase.

A key highlight of Day 2 of the General Assembly was MOIRAI’s strong alignment with EDITO – European Digital Twin Ocean and its contribution to Destination Earth (DestinE). During a dedicated workshop, Ivan Alsina Ferrer (BSC) and Jun She (DMI) presented the EDITO Virtual Ocean Model Lab and On-Demand Models and Applications. MOIRAI will integrate its ocean–climate models into the EDITO framework, contributing to a seamless European Digital Twin Ocean and enabling sharper, policy-relevant climate information for end users.

The Assembly also provided space to connect with sister projects SEAClim and EU-INTERCHANGE, exploring synergies and future cooperation on regional climate impact prediction for European seas.

With clear progress across work packages and strong alignment on the road ahead, the consortium moves into the next phase with real momentum: advancing integrated modelling to better support climate resilience in Europe’s marine and coastal regions.
