EwE 2025 Course Fully Booked — A Sign of the Times for Ocean Science

The Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) Course 2025, held from 27–31 October 2025 at the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC) in Barcelona, Spain, came in at full capacity — a clear indicator of the growing demand for ecosystem‑based modelling expertise in marine science.

Organised under the umbrella of several major research initiatives — including MOIRAI, ActNow, GES4SEAS, Strategias Marinas, and SURIMI, and endorsed by International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) — the five‑day programme brought together scientists, students and practitioners committed to advancing ecosystem modelling for marine management and policy.

The first three days of the course focused on the core EwE methodology: constructing Ecopath mass‑balance models, and then exploring temporal (Ecosim) and spatial (Ecospace) dynamics. The final two days zeroed in on advanced applications—multi‑species interactions, cumulative impact assessment, and integrating EwE with other environmental and policy tools.

The course was delivered by leading experts in the field — Marta Coll Monton (ICM-CSIC), Jeroen Steenbeek (Ecopath International Initiative), and Villy Christensen (University of British Columbia).

Although all available spots were filled, the organisers are already discussing follow‑up training opportunities — including a potential annual course endorsed by ICES starting in Copenhagen in 2026.
